Botox Q & A

What can Botox treatments do for my skin?

Botox treatments offer you a way to turn back the clock on your skin. At Coopersburg Family Practice, you can receive Botox treatments to reduce or eliminate the appearance of wrinkles caused by facial muscle movements.

Botox can minimize the appearance of:

  • Worry lines and frown lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Smile lines

These types of lines and wrinkles are known as dynamic wrinkles or expression lines. They etch deeper into your skin each time you frown, smile, laugh, or make any other facial movement.

Botox does not treat static wrinkles, which are wrinkles that appear as you age, and your skin starts to lose elasticity and sag. If you’re interested in treating static wrinkles, Coopersburg Family Practice offers dermal fillers in addition to Botox.

How does Botox work?

Botox injections relax overactive facial muscles with only a tiny amount of a purified version of botulinum toxin A under the skin.

When your provider injects Botox directly into target muscles, it blocks local nerve pulses, so that those muscles can’t contract, but instead relax.

As they relax, your associated wrinkles and lines fade or completely disappear. Typically, you notice fading within one day, and full results after five. Expect smooth, wrinkle-free skin for about four months.

Do Botox injections hurt?

Botox treatment causes little to no pain, and the procedure doesn’t require anesthesia. Also, Botox doesn’t affect your sensory nerves, so you won’t experience injection site numbness.

However, after your session, which takes only about 10 minutes, you may experience some temporary side effects, such as:

  • Bruising and swelling
  • Redness
  • Localized pain
  • Inflammation
  • Tenderness

Side effects don’t last long, and after your treatment, you can immediately return to your normal day.

To complement your Botox treatment, Coopersburg Family Practice offers Latisse® eyelash booster, an FDA-approved treatment for thin or thinning eyelashes. Latisse applications make your lashes darker, thicker, and longer.
